There are three categories of membership in GMPA: active, student, and sustaining.
Active Members. Open to any individual who meets at least one of the following requirements. This is the only membership classification that carries full voting privileges. Active members are also the only members of GMPA who may serve as officers, members of the Board of Directors or committee chairpersons.

  • (A) Any individual who has successfully completed the Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) examination of National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), or
  • (B) Any individual who has graduated from an ABA approved program of study for paralegals, or
  • (C) Any individual who has graduated from a course of study for paralegals which is institutionally accredited but not ABA approved, and which requires not less than the equivalent of 60 semester hours of classroom study, or
  • (D) Any individual who has graduated from a course of study for paralegals other than those set forth in (b) and (c) above, plus not less than six months of in-house training as a paralegal, whose attorney/employer attests that such person is qualified as a paralegal, or
  • (E) Any individual who has received a baccalaureate degree in any field, plus not less than six months of in-house training as a paralegal, whose attorney/employer attests that such person is qualified as a paralegal, or
  • (F) Any individual who has a minimum of three years of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney, including at least six months of in-house training as a paralegal, whose attorney/employer attests that such person is qualified as a paralegal, or
  • (G) Any individual who has a minimum of two years of in-house training as a paralegal, whose attorney/employer attests that such person is qualified as a paralegal.
  • (H) Any individual who holds an LPN, RN, SN, and who is currently employed as a Legal Nurse Consultant.

Student Members. Open to any individual who is a student in good standing in an accredited paralegal training school or program and is working toward a degree or certification, provided the individual is not employed as a paralegal/legal assistant.

Sustaining Members. Open to those individuals, law firms, corporations, paralegal program representatives, members of bar associations, members of the paralegal education field, or those persons directly involved in the supervision of paralegals concept or are actively involved in the promotion of the paralegal profession who contribute dues of $50.00 or any amount in excess thereof.
